Learning and appreciation of foreign literary works is helpful fordeveloping trans-cultural perspectives and expanding vision ofstudents. As a specific carrier of culture, foreign novels are of certainresearch and learning value. Due to the stylistic features of novels likelong length and rich content, however, many problems exist in theinterpretation of Chinese teaching in senior high schools.This paper, through focusing on foreign novels rfom Chinesetextbooks (Shanghai version) for senior high school students, has triedto relfect on the interpretation of foreign novels duirng Chineseteaching for senior high school students in a point-to-face waythrough discussing the current states of interpretation, suggestions,dilemmas and countermeasures on some compulsory texts, includingThe Necklace, The Last Leaf, The Metamorphosis, Eugenie Grandetand The Old Man and the Sea. Moreover, author of this paper isaiming at providing certain reference for novel teaching of Chineseteaching for senior high school students by combining with personalteaching experience.In general, this paper covers following content:The ifrst part: reasons for the res arch and value of teachingforeign novels in Chinese teaching for senior high school studentswere stated; then a brief sorting and review on current researchdocuments was made; finally, major research methods applied in thispaper were summarized.The second part: firstly, the selection of foreign novels forChinese textbooks(Shanghai version) for senior high school studentswas surveyed; secondly, major problems existing in the teaching offoreign novels for senior high school students were analyzedaccording to questionnaires on current state of reading foreign novelsamong the students and reasons for the existence of the problems werestudied. Statement in this part was made from selection of novels,difficulty of foreign novels, influence of cultural difference, inlfuenceof exam-oriented education and interpreting methods of teachers. The third part: strategies for improving the teaching of foreignnovels during Chinese teaching for senior high school students werediscussed and personal suggestions were come up with rfom fouraspects. Meanwhile,the ways to show adequate respect to thepolysemy of the novels as well as to the understanding and feeling ofstudents was studied vigorously so as to create relaxing and livelyatmosphere in class.
