In the late1970s, people began to realize the importance of vocabulary teaching in English teaching process again. Many experts and scholars make lots of investigations into vocabulary teaching, but few have been done on the vocabulary learning strategies used by Senior One students in Senior High Schools. Vocabulary is the basis of language learning. There will be no language without vocabulary. As for senior high students, it is difficult for them to remember a large quantity of vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of vocabulary learning strategies, direct students’ vocabulary learning strategies and improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning, which is helpful for students to develop students’ autonomous learning ability and achieve the goal of personalized learning.Different experts and scholars have made classifications of vocabulary learning strategies. Mainly based on Schmitt(1997) vocabulary learning strategies, the thesis divides vocabulary learning strategies into discovery strategies(determination strategies and social strategies) and consolidation strategies(social strategies, memory strategies, cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies). The author designed a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire which involved100participants coming from two classes in Senior One of Tianjin No.100Senior High School. The research makes attempt to answer these questions:1. What vocabulary learning strategies are frequently used by Senior High Grade One students of high school? Which is more helpful?2. What is the difference between female and male students in Senior One in the application of vocabulary learning strategies?3. What is the difference between top students and below-average students in Senior One in the application of vocabulary learning strategies?4. Is there correlation between the scores and the use of the vocabulary learning strategies?A questionnaire of vocabulary learning strategy, a vocabulary test and a sheet of interview are involved in the survey. Data collected from vocabulary learning strategies was analyzed with SPSS16.0. The analysis procedures included descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and independent samples T-test. The results of the survey are like this:1. Participants apply many vocabulary learning strategies. However, the whole level of strategy using is not high, especially in social and metacognitive strategies. What they apply most is memory strategy and cognitive strategy. That means they have get accustomed to the traditional vocabulary learning strategies. Although they are in favor of some new vocabulary learning strategies, they will not adopt them.2. In terms of the differences of vocabulary learning strategies applied between female and male participants, we can convince that the female participants apply more vocabulary learning strategies than male participants. Because of the logical thinking and learning habits, it is more acceptable to receive such a result.3. According to the differences of vocabulary learning strategies applied between top and below average participants, it is not difficult to find that top participants use vocabulary learning strategies more frequently than below average participants in most cases. Because top participants have benefited from the application of vocabulary learning strategies, they are more willing to use them.4. The analysis shows that social and cognitive strategies have a higher rank of correlation than determination and memory strategies, which have a weak correlation between the two variables. Metacognitive strategy has no correlation with the vocabulary test scores. This may be caused by Senior One students’ low self-discipline. To some extent, there is some correlation between vocabulary learning strategies and the vocabulary test scores. There is no denying that it is necessary to master and apply some vocabulary learning strategies. It becomes increasing apparent that "teaching learners how to learn" is crucial.
