A Study On The World Class University Project(WCU Project)in South Korea

Built the world-class university not only provides a place for inventing and discovery of national science and technology, but also provides an important cradle for professional talents at the level of world. At the same time, in the era of knowledge, whether to have world-class universities or not, it becomes the important rules for comprehensive national standard. Nowadays, many countries, especially developing countries have world-class university as the main strategic goal for the pursuit of excellence in the area of higher education. In the turbulent and competitive condition, with a wave of higher education innovation, these universities in Korea combined their specific situations, which unveiled a world-class WCU program at the high level in universities, and successfully completed the first phase of the project construction.WCU project, which is World Class University in South Korea, set in June2008by South Korea’s President lee, aims to improve the quality of education at the University of domestic research, and carry out some important measures to produce world-class high level University. The main goal of WCU construction plan is to cultivate these talents, who can promote the country for the future development of core area and a new generation of academic researchers, and attract a large number of overseas academic researchers with high level research ability, enrich the domestic research at the university of strength, update education research, so as to build a world-class research university. In the five years which the plan practiced, it has introduced a large number of overseas scholars to domestic university teaching and research, promote the domestic university ethos of innovation education and research, greatly improve the scientific research ability and the internationalization level of the university of South Korea.The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the WCU program, at the point of the macro and micro view, and to introduce the WCU program in detail. What is more, the implementation of the background, basic content and implementation of the status quotation are showed in order to build a world-class high level university, which provides valuable experience for reference. The thesis is divided into five parts. In the first part, the significance of the selected topic, and the related review in this paper will be showed for South Korea’s world-class high level university construction plan (WCU) research status. In the second part, the implementation of the background of South Korea world-class high level university construction plan will be demonstrated from the aspects of colleges and universities, and nationality. In the third part, the basic content of the plan, including plan purpose, support areas and types, funds investment, application and evaluation will be introduced. In the fourth part, the implementation status of the plan will be explained. In the fifth part, it will analyze the characteristics of the project, and put forward some beneficial enlightenments to our country building world-class high level university.
