Square dance is a collective dance for people to exercise and entertain. As a special product ofthe age, it has become one of the world’s most popular, widespread and effective fitnessprograms in a very short period of time. This is because it meets the demand of socialdevelopment and people’s current pursuit of bodybuilding and spirit. Square dance bears thedistinctive cultures of different regions, nationalities and religions, and thus its uniquecharm and strong vitality necessarily results in its major role in public fitness programs.The article takes the development of square dance in four main districts in Xining City as theresearch object. With the help of related documents, questionaires, field visit andmathematical statistics, it investigates and analyses the current situation and influential factorsin order to comprehend the circumstance, find out the potential problems and propose thecorrespondent solutions and suggestions. It is hoped to provide a reference for developing andperfecting the square dance in Xining City and promote the development of public fitness inXining City. Moreover, it could be a reference for the development of square dance in thepoor and underdeveloped regions.The investigative research about the participants, instructors and organizations in Xining Cityleads to the following conclusions. First, old people are the majority of the participants inXining City, most of whom are workers and retirees. And there are more women than men.Their income is low but stable, whose low average consumption on sports is mainly used topay for membership fees. After a period of regular exercise, their health and emotion havebeen remarkably improved. Second, physical exercising and entertainment are people’s keymotives to participate in the square dance. Besides, the local culture is another factor of theirchoice. The square dance in Xining City is distinct and innovative, which is due to theinfluence of Hehuang culture and to a long-term conflict and collision of various cultures.Third, most square dances are spontaneously organized by the public, but the developmenttends to be diverse. The government pays much attention to the training of social instructors,but the number of social instructors differs in every districts. The broadcasting of scientificexercising knowledge and methods is ignored. What’s more, the update of dance is too slowand the teaching method is single. Forth, the site facility cannot fulfil the public demand oweto the crowded field, potential risk of safety and poor audio devices. However, comparing toother places, Xining government has taken some measures to regulate some objectiveproblems such as disturbing residents. Fifth, the public are less positive in taking part insquare dance, which results from less fund, imperfect match rules, shortness of performing characteristics in matches and high cost of energy in rehearsal. Meanwhile, the teams ofsquare dance did not fully use the chances of competition and performance, much less didthey produce their own brand in virtue of favorable conditions.
