In English learning, learners have their own internal, psychological reasons when theystart to learn and maintain English. We call this kind of internal and psychologicalreasons learning motivation. Learning motivation has been widely studied since the1950s by Canadian psychologists Gardner and Lambert. Domestic and overseas scholarsdefine learning motivation from various perspectives and sort motivation into severaltypes based on different standards. This study is to investigate the relationship betweencountryside senior school students’ English learning motivation and improvement of theirEnglish reading through questionnaire, literature study, individual interview, experiment,comparative study, etc. In China, English is an important and useful course for seniorschool students now, and reading ability is a critical part in students’ English learning, forthey must do well in English examinations and get high scores so that they can get intouniversity to realize their dreams. However, a large number of students achieve little inEnglish learning, especially in English reading, which even leads to their self-suspicionof their ability. The low efficiency and unsatisfactory effect on English reading can hardlymake students satisfied. Therefore, it is necessary to motivate and maintain students’English learning motivation. But many teachers fail to pay close attention to therelationship between senior school students’ English learning motivation andimprovement of English reading, and find it difficult to get senior school students toimprove their English reading and their language achievement. The thesis tries toinvestigate the relationship and put forward to some teaching applications to promote andmaintain students’ English learning motivation and improve their English reading. Thisstudy will present some new perspectives on the relationship between countryside seniorschool students’ English learning motivation and improvement of English reading. It alsowill put forwards some teaching applications to stimulate senior school students’ Englishlearning motivation and improve their English reading. It will make contribution to theresearch of English learning motivation by conducting investigation on countrysidesenior school students. The significance of this research can be seen in terms ofinstructional and practical contributions. The instrument for the present research is a Likert-scale questionnaire. The questionnaire is designed to examine the motivationaltypes and the correlations between motivation variables and English reading efficiency.The subjects are fromNo.2Middle School of Xinfeng County, which is a key countrysidesenior middle school in Jiangxi Province.This thesis carried out a study on the relationship between countryside senior schoolstudents’ English learning motivation and improvement of English reading. Theconclusion of this survey can be drawn as follows: all the further subdivisions ofmotivation can be found in countryside senior school students’ English learning, Internalmotivation has greater positive effect on countryside senior school students than externalmotivation in English learning, the proficiency of countryside senior school students’English reading show different degree of motivation intensity: high scorers have strongerinternal motivation than low scorers, female students have more interest and sense ofachievement, pressure affects countryside senior school students’ English readingachievement. Finally, the thesis raises some relevant strategies to help English teachersand students further understand the role of motivation in English reading, and then takecorresponding measures to optimize their English teaching and learning.
