Tai chi in China and yoga in India are popular sports around the world nowadays.They have their own characteristics, and have the sound effects of improving the bodyfunction and enhance the body health, hence their increasing favor by people,especially the contemporary college and university students. These institutions ofhigher learning in recent years have gradually carried out tai chi and yoga courses,attracting more and more students to participate in the exercises.In this paper, the research methods of literature, questionnaire, observations,interview, statistics and logical analysis have been employed. From the perspective of7w mode, the similarities and differences between tai chi and yoga in the colleges anduniversities in Nanchang area are analyzed and the gap between them on the aspectsof source of information, teaching content, teaching media, teaching objects, studentslearning effectiveness, and teaching objectives are also investigated, thus to identifythe features and rules of tai chi and yoga teaching in institutions of higher learning,and to explore the methods and strategies for their future development in colleges anduniversities.The study results are as follows:1. About the teachers’ structure of Tai Chi andyoga, from the perspective of gender, the numbers of the male and female teachersvary little, but the yoga teachers are mainly the female; from the perspectives ofeducation titles and age, the majority are young teachers and the titles basically areteaching assistant and lecturer; on education background, the teachers are mainly ofthe master’s degree, followed by the bachelor’s, and those graduated from juniorcolleges and doctors rare; on the major they have studied in school, little majors in taichi or yoga, and most of them learn thorough books, and CDs; on the papers theyhave established and their teaching time, more than half of them haven’t establishedany relative papers, and of the established, papers on tai chi are beyond yoga, and theteachers’ teaching time concentrated from one to two years; on teaching motivation,mainly because of the needs of work, especially the tai chi teaching.2. About theteaching content, there is no related teaching material or curricula. The teachingcontent of tai chi is the Tai Chi24Type, while of the yoga teaching, nearly eachteacher has their own way, with no unified requirements3. In institutions of higher learning tai chi and yoga are unlikely to use instructional media, even there in nofundamental teaching materials. The most commonly used instructional media isrecorder, and its use in tai chi teaching is much less than in yoga.4. About thestudents’ structure, from the gender perspective, the proportion of men and women inelective tai chi class is almost equally divided, while the majority of elective yogaclass are women; terms of age, the ages of students who elective tai chi and yoga aremainly18,19and20years; on the grade, students of tai chi quan are mainlyconcentrated in the freshman year, but seldom those from other grades. While for theyoga students, they come from all the grades; on the learning situation, the studentscome to know both tai chi and yoga mainly from the classes.5. Students both in theelective tai chi and yoga class find that they become quite relaxed, calm and stable,pressure has been reduced or even eliminated, and their mind becomes peaceful. Onthe attitude of students, they are satisfied on the whole, no matter with theirprofessional skill or their teaching attitude; over the school’s hour arrangement, somestudents are satisfied but still a large number of them have complaints; of the student’snumber of one class, it is set basically between21-30.6. Students initially choose bothcourses mainly for the reduction of mental pressure, and for the teachers who engagein these courses also think that the major function of tai chi and yoga is stress relieve.7. on the whole, students’ attitude towards the school’s site facilities and equipment isfavorable, but there still exits some who are not satisfied, especially the studentschoosing the tai chi. The teachers basically think that the school has meet the needs ofthe students, and still also some don’t think so, especially yoga teachers.
