Objective:Mental health, as a precondition and a fundamental factor for soldiers’ health concern, decides one’s ability of accomplishing goals in military operation. Mental health concerns of soldiers from plateau regions have been a hot research topic in the area of military study in recent years. Mental health characters and influence factors, playing important roles in the development and enhancement of military psychological theory, are not only urgent needs to enhance our military combat effectiveness, but also promote troops’ psychological education training practice. In recent years, domestic research in mental health has accumulated a rich theoretical base with mature research methods. Studies about the definition, structure and assessment tools of soldiers’ mental health have been done. Some scholars made preliminary research on mental health of soldiers at plateauregions. But the limitation in sampling contributes to inconsistent results. Thus, it is necessary to conduct future studies. The purpose of this study lists as follows:(1) to compare the difference between mental health situation of soldiers at plateau regions and flatland areas;(2) to evaluate the difference between mental health situation of different demographic characteristic soldiers at plateau regions;(3) to analyze the influence of personality characteristics on mental health of soldiers at plateau regions;(4) to analyze and understand the professional values of soldiers at plateau regions;(5) to analyze the relationship between occupational values and mental health of officers and soldiers at plateau regions;(6) to systematically summarize the mental health status of officers and soldiers at plateaus, and to provide theoretical basis for further research and development of the psychological quality of the plateau officers and soldiers.Subjects and methods:The study was divided into three parts. In the first part, 3930 army servicemen who service permanently at a high-altitude area were assigned as the research objects. We used self-general information questionnaire, Symptom Checklist(Symptom Checklist 90,SCL-90), and Index of Well-Being as evolution tools. The analysis of variance and t test were used to explore the difference between soldiers at plateau regions and flatland areas, and to compare the difference between mental health situation of different demographic characteristic soldiers at plateaus, which is good for the maintenance of permanent high-altitude plateau serving soldiers’ mental health and provides some scientific theory basis for carrying out mental health educational training. In the second part, 375 soldiers at plateau region were recruited as the research objects. Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire and General Self-Efficacy Scale were used as evolution tools. We used t test and multiple variable linear regression equation to analyze the influence of personality characteristics of mental health. In the third part, the research objects were as same as the second part. Work Values Inventory(WVI) was used as the evolution tool. We analyze and understand the professional values of soldiers at plateau regions. We used multiplevariable linear regression equation to analyze the influence of work values on mental health of soldiers at plateau regions, which benefits for providing theoretical basis for selection and screening of personnel.Results:1. The Comparison between Mental Health of Soldiers at Plateau Regions and Plain AreasCompared with soldiers at flatland area, soldiers from high-altitude have higher self-report scores in the subscales of somatization, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive,depression, and phobic anxiety. Soldiers at plateau regions have lower self-report scores in the section of well-being.2. Comparison of Mental Health Status of Plateau Soldiers with Different Demographic CharacteristicsSoldiers, who have married, have higher level of education, are from rural origin, and are serviced as officers have relatively serious mental health concerns.3. The Influence of Personality Characteristics on Mental Health of Soldiers at Plateau RegionsSoldiers with good mental health condition have higher self-report scores in stability, dominance, worldly-wisdom, self-reliance, but lower scores in test-ability and sensitivity.Soldiers who are in good shape mentally also have higher self-efficacy and are able to adapt plateau life well.4. The occupational values of officers and soldiers at Plateau RegionsPlateau officers and soldiers on the three dimensions of professional values, the intrinsic value of the external reward and the same score, the highest external value. Of the15 items of professional values of plateau-serving soldiers, the 5 leading items were colleague relationships, lifestyle, altruism, achievement and supervisory relationships. The5 last items were management, creativity, economic returns, intellectual stimulation and security.5. The Correlation between Occupational Values and Mental Health of Soldiers atPlateau RegionsExcept for the financial reward, the study indicated that all dimensions of occupational values were significantly positively correlated with mental health.Intellectual stimulation, altruism, independence, aesthetic feeling, achievement were significantly negative-correlated to happiness.Conclusion:1. The general mental health condition of soldiers at plateaus is poorer than whom from the plains.2. In plateau regions, soldiers who service as cadres, get married, are with higher education and come from rural areas report more significant mental health problems.3. High in stability, tenacity, sophisticated, self-discipline, and self-efficacy, but low in dare, sensitivity lead soldiers have better mental health conditions, which makes those with such features more suitable to service in the plateau.4.The higher occupational expectations the soldiers have, the more psychological symptoms and the worse well-being of the plateau soldiers experience.
