Research On Political Scene In The Perspective Of Media Situation Theory

With new media constantly emerging, people pay more and more attention to the impact of media technology themselves to the society. Media technology theory represented by McLuhan got the attention of the academia. Theory of Media Situation is the scholars of Toronto School Joshua Meyrowitz’s theory in the 1980’s. It is based on the media technology theory of McLuhan, and cleverly apply Erving Goffman’s scene theory to explain the media’s influence on social behavior. It opened up a theoretical framework called "media--scene--behavior", provided a new annotation for the important influence of media technology. In the theory of Media Situation, the scene analysis as the key object, become a bridge of relationship between media and social behavior. The political scene is a very important branch of media scene. This is not only because the media plays the important role of reporting the political news, but also because of the media itself is controlled by political power.According to Meyrowitz’s "media--scene--behavior" analysis, this essay put the political scene as the research object, analyzing the change of the political scene and the relationship between human behavior in the political scene and media. Through these changes, the essay makes a peek at what will change with the nature of the medium itself. This essay uses literature research, case analysis, comparative research methods, etc. The first chapter of the essay mainly introduced the research background, research purpose, research methods, innovation, and some basic concepts of interpretation. The second chapter is the introduction of the theory of Media Situation, which is the basic theory of the essay, including its proposing, main ideas and theoretical significance. From Meyrowitz’s "situation" to Goffman’s "scene", this logic will be explained in chapter 3. And it pointed out the meaning of the scene in the perspective of the theory of Media Situation. In regard to the political scene we can see and the analyze, one is the real scene when ordinary people participate in politics in daily life, the other is the virtual scene related to the political elite that media presented to the audience on the screen. The fourth chapter analyzes what is the difference between virtual political scenes the media to the audience in different medium situation. The fifth chapter analyses the real political scene changes in the public daily life. The thesis draws two conclusions:the change of the political scene is decided by the development of media technology and the degree of media control at the same time; the development of media technology changed the nature of the medium itself.The theory of Media Situation is a piece of land that is not yet highly developed in domestic academia. The research about it is less. And the research on scene is rare, mainly confined to the field of landscape design. In this era of media update frequently, the influence of media on people is incalculable. This paper choose the political scene in mainland China as the research object, its conclusion also has the certain geographical limitations. I hope this article can enrich the theory of Media Situation in today’s society, causing more and more people focus on the scene of media, as well as providing some reference for the medium research in the future.
