Research On Media Reports Of Negative Function About Counter-terrorism

Since the September 11 th terrorist attacks happened in the United States in 2001, China was plagued with Tibet independence forces, separatists from Xinjiang and religious extremism. Thus, the research related terrorism began to have drawn the attention of the domestic scholars. To satisfy the audience’s right to know and fulfill its own environmental monitoring function, the reports on terrorism taken by the mass media are inevitable. The problems rise naturally.Some of the news reports took by media and journalists have produced some problems in different extent, for example, contributing to embolden terrorists, intensifying social panic and impeding counter-terrorism operations smoothly carried out by the government. The researches took by domestic scholar’s mostly focus on foreign terrorist events, which produced earlier and more frequently than our country, the study about anti-terrorism reports in our country is very few. Because of the differences between domestic and foreign in political, economic, social environment, the research on terrorism abroad are not fully applicable to the situation of our country. Therefore, the research on the negative factors which is shown by anti-terrorism report of domestic media in recent years has urgent academic contents and real senses.This paper is divided into five parts, the first chapter—introduction states the research background of this paper, the research status of the topic at home and abroad, the research value of report on anti-terrorism, as well as the theoretical basis and research methods. Starting from the second chapter is the main body of this paper. In the second chapter, the author combines with concrete examples, analysis many counter-terrorism reports, come to conclusion that the problems exposed by the media are divided into excessive description of terrorist event details and the report language specification on terrorist incidents two section, then carry on in detail. Chapter iii—the dangers of media negative factors in the counterterrorism reports mainly have four kinds: exacerbate social panic, produce the diffusion effect; increase the difficulty in the government’s counterterrorism operations; to inspire potential criminals and teenagers follow; it is not conducive to national unity and social stability. In the fourth chapter, the author respectively from internal cause-media and external-terrorism two aspects discusses reasons, why the media expose the problems in the counter-terrorism reports, thoroughly analyze the cause of negative factors, laid a theoretical foundation for the fifth chapter. Based on the analysis of the fourth chapter, in the fifth chapter, the author puts forward some practical recommendations from the media self-discipline and government intervention two aspects.From what has been discussed above, the author from the perspective of media criticism, using various research methods, including textual analysis, case study method, literature review method and so on, thorough inquiry the negative factors which is shown by anti-terrorism report of domestic media. At the same time, in combination with the instances which have significant impact at home and abroad, the comprehensive discussion has been carried on the harm and the reason of media negative factors in the reports on terrorism. In the end of the paper, combined with many countries’ anti-terrorism practices, the author have put forward operational suggestions, such as set self-discipline rules by the press association, multi-level control processes established within the media, unify information distribution channels, standardize anti-terrorism news language and develop rules of media reports on terror.
