Dashengwula was an institution in charge of fishing and catching articles of tributein Qing Dynasty, whose primary task was paying fish tribute to the emperor. Therefore,thousands of fishermen were enslaved. With this in mind, research on Dashengwulatributary fishing is of great significance to understanding the culture of Manchus and ofgreat help to comprehending the strict tributary system of Qing Dynasty. Based onprevious studies, the present research systematically expounds the specific proceduresof Dashengwula tributary fishing, and attempts to summarize the significance ofDashengwula tributary fishing, and further explores its positive influence andenlightenment on current social reform and development. This paper can be divided intosix parts, namely main body (composed of three chapters), introduction, conclusion andbibliography.Chapter One, entitled The Eight Banners System and Dashengwula Tributes,begins its exploration with Qing’s eight banners system, touching on catching andfishing institutions according to eight-banner system. By analyzing the establishment,functions and tributes captured of Dashengwula administrative offices, this chapterpaves the way for research on Dashengwula tributary fishing, thus sorts out the relationsbetween the eight banners system and Dashengwula tributes.Chapter Two initially discusses how to catch tributary fish and regulate them, thencomprehensively introduces the divisions and functions of tributary fishes, andbackground and details of tributary fishing. Besides, this part elaborates on regulationsabout rewards and punishments of tributary fishing, as well as storing and presenting oftributary fishes in a systematical and overall manner. In Chapter Three, the fishermen of Dashengwula are investigated in detail. Thispart illustrates the strict and rigid regulatory institutions directed at fishermen andspecifies the number, distribution, rights and obligations of fishermen. Consequently,fishermen enjoyed extremely low social status, and within the Manchu banner peoplethere exists the hierarchical relation—the exploited and the exploiting class.Analyzing the memorials to the emperor, documents, local chronicles and previousstudies, the present study chooses Qing’s Dashangwula tributary fishing as its researchsubject, examines Dashengwula tributary fishing in a comprehensive and systematicalway, by adopting relative theory and research method of history and folklores, in thehope of offering a historical lesson to the current reform and social development.
