This research aims to study the impact of community-based development practicein reducing poverty in slum communities. In this study, the author selectedSuanPlucommunity as a case study because the community hastwo different housingprojects. The first project is the “centralized” housing project titled”We Care Housing”p roject and the second is “Secure Housing”project, which applied the concept ofcommunity-based development (CBD). The result shows thatCBD doescontribute topoverty reduction in community. In the economic sense, there is more economic stabilityin the households of Secure Housing project thanks to funds and welfare schemesestablished in the community. With regards to the quality of life, the Secure Housingproject promoted education to its members by founding a library and learning complex inthe community. Moreover, having community health center and providing basic healthknowledge are crucial for promoting good health for the Secure Housing communitymembers as well. The opposite is obvious in the We Care Housing project, where there isneither fund or welfare scheme nor learning center and health center for the communitymembers. The result also indicates that CBD concept helps promote members’participation and increase social capital, which are regarded as the major factor thatcaused different outcome for poverty reduction between Secure Housing Project and Wecare Housing project. |
