It gives different cultural backgrounds narrative contexts to Chinese films.Ever since the new millennium, after ancient films boomed for 10 years, Chinese films gradually take the road to commercial blockbusters. With “HERO” by Zhang Yimou as the beginning, a large number of swordsman films which gave priority to display visual spectacles emerged. However, as the audience grew tired aesthetically, overseas markets shrank. In recent years, ancient swordsman films have gradually declined.Chinese Martial Arts film occur and become an alternative genre of ancient swordsman films. From the early “THE PROMISE”, “Mural”, “Painted Skin” series to “Detective D” series and then to the recent “Monster Hunt”, “The Ghouls”, “The Mermaid” and other homemade monster films show a strong earning power once screened and become a popular Chinese Martial Arts film phenomenon in the new century.This article attempts to analyze the genre characteristics of Chinese Martial Arts films from the perspective of genre science, with Chinese Martial Arts film phenomenon in China since the new century as the research object. From the development process of early Chinese monster films to new century Chinese Martial Arts films, it explores their core genre formula, i.e., figure relationship, genre representation, plot setting and cultural context, etc., reveals the inner driving force of the “genre formula” of Chinese monster films in the new era. Meanwhile, through a cross-cultural examination of genres, it probes into the genre formula of Hollywood fantastic films and compares the advantages and disadvantages of domestic monster films. Whilst Chinese genre films build a local resource capital model, it needs to find out more strategies to create unconventional genre films. From genre concept and strategic level, monster films are the only choice. From the angle of theory and creation,Chinese Martial Arts films are a cover with the most constructive value,competitiveness and productivity.
