On E-C Translation Of Financial Texts

Financial texts are informative texts according to the theories of Peter Newmark and Katharina Reiss on text types. The communicative translation method should be adopted in the translation of informative texts, delivering mostly the referential information of the source text to the target readers. The translation of financial texts should also take the communicative translation method.The financial texts in English share the linguistic features of English used in science and technology. They use a wide range of words, including a lot of terms and proper nouns. They have a high frequency of nominalizations and long sentences. These linguistic characteristics make the translation of financial texts especially difficult.The strategy of domestication should be adopted when English financial texts are translated into Chinese to better convey information to the target readers and help them understand the contents of the source text. The strategy of foreignization should be adopted when we translate the financial terms and proper nouns in order to ensure the authenticity of information and to preserve their technicality. When translating INTERIM REPORT AS AT JUNE 30,2014-PRESS RELEASE, the author generally adopts the domestication strategy but the foreignization strategy with the terms and proper nouns. Various translation techniques are also proposed.The author suggests that the technique of free translation should be used in the translation of the common words in the financial context and literal translation in the translation of terms, along with direct inquiry, indirect inquiry and reverse-checking. Accepted terms in the target language should be used with the translation of terms. Various techniques should be combined with the translation of abbreviations. Conversion of nouns into verbs and clarification are to be used dealing with nominalizations. When translating long sentences, we can follow the original order of sentence structure when it matches the order in Chinese and divide the original sentence if there are too many modifications and invert the sentence structure if it does not match the order in Chinese.
