Fuqian was a well-know master studying earlier and classic texts in the Eastern Han Dynasty. As he was one of the most representative scholars quoted in Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Records, his views have received great attention from scholars for studying the language, characters, phonology and social histories of The Historical Records, History of the Han Dynasty and other works in the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties. Due to the passage of a long time, all of Fuqian’s works were lost and people after him cannot have a good look at his original works. Even today Fuqian’s views can still be seen in different ancient books and records. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct a special and systematic study on Fuqian and his works and explore the contents and features of his main works and the methods and thoughts for scholarly research reflected within. This thesis begins with the presentation of the research status of Fuqian and his works, and then focuses on analyzing and concluding the content and features of the Fuqian’s notes and the thoughts for scholarly research reflected on the basis of Fuqian’s explanatory notes cited in the aristocratic family part of Three Scholars’ Annotation to The History Records. At the meantime, errors, mistakes and disorders in explanatory notes are discriminated. Here are the brief introductions to the main chapters.The introduction mainly states the research status of the thesis topic and the object and significance of the study. Though being one of the most important exegetes in Three Scholars’ Annotation to The History Records, Fuqian has never received the attention he deserved. Majority of previous researches focus on compilation and edition of scattering documents and manuscripts of Fuqian’s works. As for those works themselves, deep and careful studies are absent. Considering the great values held and reflected by those works, there is much room for improvement. Thus, it is of necessity to make further efforts in digging into and proving the features of the content, scopes,methods and thoughts noted in Fuqian’s annotation to classic works.Chapter One is about Fuqian’s works and his achievements. First, descriptions towards Fuqian himself and his works are sorted out. Through sorting out the brief biographies and anecdotes of Fuqian recorded in historical records like History of the Later Han Dynasty and A New Account of the Tales of the World, this part gives a brief introduction to Fuqian’s life. Besides, a statistical processing is made upon Fuqian’s works that are recorded in History of the Han Dynasty: Art and Literature and History of the Sui Dynasty: Classics. Second, it summarizes the research status of Fuqian’s works mainly in two aspects. They are the compilation and edition status of his works and the research status of related works.Chapter Two focuses on the classification and features of the contents in Fuqian’s notes cited in Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Records. It covers two aspects. On the one hand, it classifies the content of Fuqian’s notes cited in the aristocratic family part of Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Record and makes a concrete analysis on the form of characters or letters that express the contents. On the other hand, it concludes the features of Fuqian’s notes cited by Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Records mainly from the aspects of phonetic notations, annotation and sources of Fuqian’s notes.Chapter Three is the correction, proofreading and complement made on Fuqian’s notes cited in the aristocratic family part of Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Records. Though Three Scholars’ Annotation is one of the best versions of The Historical Records, there are still many mistakes, ommissions and errors. This chapter conducts a close investigation on the cited Fuqian’s notes and differientiates and analyzes the errors, mistakes and disorders among the notes.The final part, also the Conclusion integrates the previous analysis, concludes content and features of the cited Fuqian’s notes in the aristorical family part of Three Scholars’ Annotation to The Historical Records, and the methods and thoughts for scholarly research relected within and summarizes the erroneous, mistaken and confusing notes in the existing annotation.
