A Study On Lattimore’s Experience In China From 1937 To 1944 And Its Influence

During the period of the war of Resistance Against Japan, Lattimore mainly has three important activities in China. For the first time,he came to China in 1937 to visit Yan an.During the period from July 19 th,1941 to November 17 th,1942,he came to China for the second time.He was appointed as the private political adviser for Chiang Kai Shek. He followed Wallace’s mission to visit China in 1944 for the third time.This article aims at the Lattimore’s three important experience in China to discuss the influence of his activities on China’s Anti Japanese War and the relationship between China and the USA. It tries to start with the reasons for Lattimore’s visit to China and Lattimore’s activities in China and other aspects.As a famous expert on China in American, not only Lattimore’s study of China’s border areas was very deep. He but also played an important role during the period of Anti Japanese war. Especially during the period of days that he was appointed as the private political adviser for Chiang Kai Shek, he helped the National Government analyze the situation of the war accurately and helped China to carry out the correct foreign policy. He persuaded Chiang Kai Shek to agree to send US military to Yan an in Wallace’s visit to China. He played a positive role in the coordination of the Sino US relations and the kuomintang-Communist cooperation in order to resist Japan. The academic circles have less description on his role in the war of resistance and the impact. I want to make people have a comprehensive and accurate understanding of Lattimore according to the research on this problem.This article is divided into three questions to study.Specific things as follows:Firstly, analyzing the reasons for Lattimore’s visit to China.On the one hand,Lattimore’s own factors is important.On the other hand,the reasons for that Roosevelt makes Lattimore come to China should be discussed. Because Lattimore can speak Chinese and he knows Chinese culture deeply. Besides, he came to Yan an in 1937,and he agreed with the United Front. Roosevelt decided to nominate him as the private political adviser for Jiang Jie shi.Roosevelt hope him helped Chiang Kai Shek promote reform and establish friendly relationship with the United States.Secondly,expounding and analyzing Owen.Lattimore’s activities in China mainly chooses three important periods of time. As follows : Lattimore came to Yan an in 1937;he was appointed as the private political adviser for Chiang Kai Shek in 1941; he followed Wallace’s mission to visit China in 1944.According to his three activities in China, on the one hand,it can be seen that Lattimore’s understanding of China became more and more deep.On the other hand,it can be seen that he play an important role in the relationship between China and the United States.Thirdly, focus on the analysis of Lattimore’s experiences in China and its influence During the period of the war of Resistance Against Japan,Lattimore always to protect United Front for the purpose of Chinese.He has been acting as coordinator of the two parties. He analyzes the situation of the war and helps China to carry out the correct policy of Anti Japanses War. Lattimore’s Chinese complex and the study of China established him to analyze the international situation with the Chinese perspective. He played important role especially during the period of days that he was appointed as the private political adviser for Chiang Kai Shek. Besides, Lattimore also discussed about Chinese problems with the Washington government actively. Like Soviet supply line ’s problems and denfense meeting about Chinese joining Pacific.
