Along with the growing exchanges between different countries under the overriding trend of globalization, cross-border tourism is becoming an indispensable part in which bilingual workers are greatly involved in. This paper is based on the author’s actual experience of serving as an escort interpreter in the course of internship for a foreign engineer during his visit to the scenic spots of Xi’an and Xianyang city, Shaanxi Province. Through the practice, the author concluded that the main difficulties are to achieve cultural equivalence and effect equivalence. According to the framework of Communicative and Semantic Translation Theory, the author explores tactics like free translation, compensation and adaption in interpreting traditional Chinese architectures, local foods, customs and folklore stories, in order to achieve better effects and easy to understand in cross-cultural communication. This paper aims at figuring out the solutions to the problems of interpreting and help the author do self-reflection in practice. It is hoped that these problems in interpreting should be given much attention in practice and teaching so that others can draw on the experience and improve the quality of interpreting.
