Many important outcomes in daily life depend on how people are evaluated by others. The process of monitoring and controlling how one is perceived by others is referred to as self-presentation. Research suggests that managing impressions successfully can serve important intra- and interpersonal functions. However, self-presentational concerns have been implicated as a potential cause of a number of health issues. Through two studies, this reserch aims to explore the role of impression motivation and impression construction on the alcohol self-presentation of postgraduates. If we can discover the process of the alcohol self-presentation of postgraduates, the results will give some enlightenments for the school relevant departments to make useful intervening measure.Study 1 explored the role of impression motivation and impression construction on the alcohol self-presentation of postgraduates in the situation of the laboratory. Participants first completed individual difference questionnaires, then they were randomly assigned to high IM/alcohol IC condition, high IM/control IC condition, low IM/alcohol IC condition, low IM/control IC condition. IM and alcohol-related IC were manipulated to represent the situational portions. Alcohol self-presentation, the dependent variable, was measured by determining whether participants identified themselves as an alcohol user in an Internet profile they created to present themselves to their peers. The results showed that: only impression construction is positively related to alcohol self-presentation.Study 2 explored the role of impression motivation and impression construction on the alcohol self-presentation of postgraduates in the daily life. Participants first completed individual difference questionnaires, then the daily diary approach used in this study allowed for investigation of impression management and alcohol use that occurred during social interactions.The results showed that: impression construction is positively related to alcohol self-presentation.The interaction of self-monitoring and alcohol construction, situational impression motivation and situational impression construction are significant.Finally, the general discussion of this research was made. Impression construction could positively predict graduate student drinking behavior. And in the real life situation, impressionmotivation could influence drinking behavior by impression construction.
