A Report On The Translation Of Statistical Communiqué On The National Economic And Social Development Of Qinhuangdao In 2013 Guided By Functional Equivalence Theory

This translation report is based on the translation project--Translation of Statistical Communiqué on the National Economic and Social Development of Qinhuangdao in 2013, which is published by the bureau of statistics in Qinhuangdao. The statistical communique aims to display the development achievements of 12 major industries in Qinhuangdao in 2013 through objective statements of data and facts. Statistical communique is a kind of official document published by bureaus of statistics of all classes based on the social and economic development of local regions. It collects and organizes critical economic indicators from various industries and presents the national development through diachronic comparisons. In times of increasing globalization, the accurate translation of statistical communique can be significant promotion to foreign exchange and investment. So the study of C-E translation of statistical communique is of great meaning.The statistical communique is translated under Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory. In the report, a brief introduction of the statistical communique translation era and the necessity of statistical communique are provided, after which the analysis of statistical communique is offered, by both qualitative and quantitative means. Three kinds of equivalence are proposed including diction equivalence, cohesion equivalence and communication function equivalence through case studies on the basis of functional equivalence theory and its applicability to the translation project. Then I have put forward the equivalence principal in the translation of statistical communique by the analysis of original text, and the difficulties, key points of the translation process with according translation strategy.It is realized that the translation of statistical communique should be complied with equivalence principle according to the project of the translation of Statistical Communiqué on the National Economic and Social Development of Qinhuangdao in 2013. As for the translation strategy, the domestication strategy should come as the top guiding strategy, and with the help various translation skills such as free translation, literal translation with footnote, the target readers can get the equivalent reading experience as the original text readers.
