Based on Gile’s Effort Model, this paper examines the difficulties of allocating attention reasonably to the three major tasks: bilingual skills, note-taking effort,short-term memory operations in consecutive interpretation. By analyzing attention allocation through charts in the author’s own practices, this paper tries to present the phenomena of unbalanced effort distribution during the interpreting process and put forward coping strategies to solve this problem. According to the author’s practical experience, approaches like voice recognition or division of sense groups can be used to improve listening skills. Sight interpretation and public speaking skills can be used to improve expressing skills. Besides, gist interpretation and retelling exercises can help interpreters improve short memory skills. In conclusion, only after professional trainings, interpreters can properly handle different tasks to lessen the total work load.
