A Study On Gender Differences In E-C Translation Of Euphemism-Translator’s Perspective

Translation is usually influenced by various factors, such as background knowledge,target readers, translator’s language, etc. Besides, gender is also one of the factors. From the perspective of translator, this research uses an experiment to learn whether there is difference between male and female translators in E-C translation of euphemism.The experimental materials are selected from A Dictionary of English Euphemisms which is written by Liu Chunbao(2001). In this dictionary, euphemism can be divided into two types. The first type is traditional euphemism which is also called negative euphemism. Another type is stylistic euphemism which is also called positive euphemism.In the examination papers, each paper contains 20 sentences or paragraphs. The experimental objects are junior and senior English major students and graduate students of Grade one in North China University of Science and Technology, College of Foreign Languages. Test papers are distributed into 50 male and 50 female translators. Eventually,available papers include 17 male translators’ papers, 17 female translators’ papers, in which the completion rates are higher. In the end, it uses a quantitative analysis to see whether there is difference between male and female translator in E-C translation of euphemism. Then it uses a qualitative analysis to see what kinds of differences exist between male and female translators in translation of euphemism.According to the quantitative analysis, the male and female translators are different in translation of negative euphemism. But there is no difference in the translation of positive euphemism. According to the qualitative analysis, the difference is particularly notable in the translation of some taboo aspects. Male and female translators should pay attention to the problems in translation. This research is made hoping to be helpful for translators, and the further related research.
