| Today, most of Nabokov’s novels have already been translated into Chinese, but many of his short stories haven’t yet. With more and more scholars turning their attention to Nabokov’s short stories, these have become popular access to understanding Nabokov’s life and his literary themes. Tyrants Destroyed is a unique one of these short stories. The reason why the translator chooses Tyrants Destroyed as my translation practice is that on the one hand, it insinuates some political feelings;On the other hand, this short story is very complicated and obscure and it requires the translator has a thorough master of English and Chinese. Translating this short story is an uncommon experience and it greatly improves the translator’s translation capacity and literary quality.This report mainly consists of two parts. Firstly, the short story Tyrants Destroyed written by Nabokov who is a Russian-American writer and renowned for his novel Lolita is translated as the translation practice. Secondly, a report is written based on the translation material. It mainly includes four parts:(1) Introduction,including an introduction to the short story and the author as well as process description, consisting of the process of preparation before translating,while-translating and proofreading;(2) Theory framework-relevance theory. This part mainly includes a brief introduction to relevance theory and its guidance in the translation;(3) Case study in translating Tyrants Destroyed. In case study, the translator, guided by ostensive-inferential mode of relevance theory put forward by Sperber and Wilson, makes a detailed analysis of the difficulties and problems in the translating process. For example, how to dig into implicature behind a simple word or how to make clear new words to the readers. Besides, according to the fact that context plays a very important role in understanding literary works, the translator also uses context theory in relevant theory to guide the translation when dealing with some complex sentences or texts;(4) Conclusion. In this part, the translator tells her attainment in this translation practice and points out the deficiencies of this translation version and tells her reflection about future translation work. |
