| Featured by objectivity, concision and accuracy, the instrument and equipment instructions are science and technology texts. With the purpose of conveying the information such as the functions of the instrument or equipment, the instructions also introduce the features and operation procedures of the device. In recent years, with the development of economic cooperation and communications between China and the global world, the importance of translating instructions of import and export instrument or equipment is more and more noticeable. Based on the Chinese-English translation practice of the Operation and Maintenance Manual for Radar, and analyzing from the perspective of register theory, this report probes the guidance of theory to the C-E translation practice of instrument and equipment instruction. From the three variables of register theory, this report analyzes the functions of field, mode and tenor in comprehension and reconstruction of a text, and identifies the C-E translation strategies of instrument and equipment instructions. Furthermore, this report illustrates how to deal with the translation problems of such texts on lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level, so as to achieve the equivalence in field, mode and tenor between the source text and the target text. The research results can provide some references to the study on C-E translation strategies of instrument and equipment instructions. |
