Exploration Of Classical Chinese Translation Process Under Conceptual Blended Theory

Annals of the Kingdoms in the East Zhou Dynasty is a historical novel with complete structure and marvelous scene. Materials of the book are from famous historical records such as Intrigues of the Warring States, Zuo’s Commentary, and Records of the Historian, etc. Hence, scholars regard it as a special history book which can be read as authorized history. This book takes the ups and downs of countries as the plot line and puts forth effort to discuss the cause-and-effect relationship between the rise and decline of destiny and the failure and success of human’s activities. Justice and sage principles revealed in the book are still the foundation of being human and a nation.As a classical work of Chinese ancient culture and history, the book is of great significance in culture inheritance and transmission. Five postgraduates including the writer under his tutorship participate into the Chinese to English translation project of this book, which is the source and foundation as well as material of this thesis.Main research purpose of this thesis is to construct a model of translation process by analyzing the detailed translation process within the mind of translators, which is the analysis, translating and re-writing process from the perspective of conceptual blended theory,a classical linguistic theory from recognition linguistics, with concrete examples from the constructed English-Chinese parallel corpus of the book. The research purpose and content mainly contain:(1) translation and proofreading of the whole book;(2) corpus construction;(3) quantitative and qualitative analysis of the corpus under the guidance of conceptual blended theory, for the purpose of the exploration of the concrete translation process. With certain exposition of discourse from the translated version, the model of the translation process can be summarized.Exploration of translation process of works in classical Chinese, in terms of translational practice, bears great significance in Chinese culture overseas transmission and communication as it is probably able to provide relatively clear guidance orientation and translation principles as well as methods for later-coming works in classical Chinese; and in the aspect of translation theory, offers another perspective for the research into English translation of works in classical Chinese, which will make humble contribution for Chinese cultural traditions and values transmission.
