| This report is a case study based on the practical experience of E-C translation task: the preface and the first chapter of True Refuge-Finding Peace and Freedom in Your Own Awakened Heart, written by Tara Brach, an American clinical psychologist and founder of Buddhist meditation. True refuge is a pragmatic text on the subject of Buddhism in formal language, and this book mainly explains the basic meditation techniques and guidance, also offers some suggestions to cure mental diseases through bringing together the understanding of Buddhist and western psychology. English to Chinese translation of such masterpiece is not only an introduction of the culture and art of True Refuge to the Chinese readers, but also an experience of profound philosophy and unique artistic charm in Buddhist culture. Besides, it is more easier for target language readers to have a basic understanding of Buddhism culture and great interest in it.Under the guidance of the Translation as Adaptation and Selection, the author further analyzes and explores the translation of pragmatic text. This report explores the whole translation process and analyzes some cases in the translation, also elaborates and summarizes the translation theory and some translation methods. This report consists of four chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction to the translation task. Chapter two introduces the translation process, including pre-translation, while translation and post-translation. Chapter three is the core of the report. Under the guidance of the Translation as Adaptation and Selection, the author gives an analysis to the translation of lexicon and syntax, Buddhist terms and discourses, as well as the context from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The last chapter is the summary, in which the author points out the experiences and lessons learned in the whole translation process. Through this translation task, the author has learned a lot of new understandings of translation. It is that a good translator needs solid bilingual quality and theoretical attainment. Besides, one must have the sense of responsibility so that he can make good translation. |
