Families are the basic units of the society, which condense and reflect the revolution of ages. With the more and more connection to the outside, the new literary pioneers put their eyes on the family conflicts against the background of thousands of years of Chinese traditional culture. They criticize the traditional feudal ethics in order to fulfill the historic mission of the May 4th Procession of 1919. Among the pioneers, Lu Xun is the one who can dig into the core of family conflicts. This thesis paper takes it as the breakthrough point and analyzes the following 3 phases in detail:In the first chapter, the author clarifies the concept and feature of a family and then points out that a family is the blood relationship and supporting relationship formed on the basis of marriage. The author takes marriage and pecking order these two viewpoints and tries to analyze Lu Xun’s rational thinking and criticism about chastity and filial piety existing in traditional families. In the second chapter, the author explores the family structure described in the following 2 novel collections, say, Call to Arms and Wandering. The author goes over the related articles and then expounds the key family elements. The author analyzes the specific texts from these 3 aspects of connubiality, parenthood, and brotherhood and points out that there is a paradox in Lu Xun’s sympathy to the women in marriage, an obedience in Lu Xun’s criticism to filial piety and an estrangement in Lu Xun’s intimacy of brotherhood. In the third chapter, the author explores the family influence in Lu Xun’s novel creation and points out that Lu Xun, as a son, he has a penance and sorrow in his filial piety to parents; as a husband, he has a pain and self-contradict to his marriage; as an elder brother, he has a family responsibility and inner self-accusation to his younger brothers.
