Zhen Li, a famous flute player active in the contemporary national instrumental music stage, was grew up in 1960s and had developed into a professional flutist during the period from 1970s to 1990s. He cherishes a deep love for national art and has been bathed in the Mongolian and Han music for a long time. During the formative years, he received instruction personally from several masters such as Shangyuan Huang,and had been deeply impacted by Sen Liu, the founder of the "New Faction" flute music, which laid a foundation for his later significant achievements in both playing and composing. He had created and perfectly interpreted lots of large and medium-sized music with<Spring in Ordos>,<Below the Daqing Mountain>, and<Going to West Gate> as his representative tracks, which gave rise to his distinct and strong playing style. He is honored as one of the representative figures of "Prairie Style" and is renowned in the contemporary national wind instrument field.The current study was aimed to explore and summarize the formative and developing stages of the "Prairie Style" through a review of Zhen Li’s art life and to probe further into his composing and playing characteristics which may be enlightening to the others in terms of interpreting and mastering relevant tracks.
