Human geography documentary is accompanied by the typed development of documentary. As an important type of documentary, human geography documentary focus on the particular area’s natural landscape and human landscape, reflects the influence of human activities on geography, and explores the profound relationship between human and nature, human and culture, and nature and culture. It not only has higher culture and art characters, but also has the original enjoyment and affinity. In China, human geography documentary has experienced the rise of the 1980s, the boom of the early 1990s, the trough of the late 1990s and the stable development since 21st century. It presents a variety of trends, such like diversification and simplification, technical and artistic, personalization and standardization, commercialization and entertainment.Since 21st century, Chinese human geography documentary creators shift their creative patterns because the consumer society and popular culture are sweeping and changing almost everything. In a consumer society, the cultural factor’s position in the economic activity is becoming more and more important, in the same way, the economic factor’s deep penetration in cultural production is also so important that cannot be ignored. Considered the commercialization of cultural production, commercial consideration is bound to become an important proposition of cultural production in the future. Human geography documentary has been a cultural commodity, so there is a heavy mission to earn its economic value, at the moment, the documentary creators change old ideas of ignoring market and satisfy the needs of popular cultural consumption is very necessary. In order to satisfy the needs of audience and realize the economic value, human geography documentary creators in China start trying to follow the market logic, then a lot of changes happened in the selection of topics, expression, research of market, and so on, all of these speed up the marketization of documentary. The marketization of documentary is inevitable, but we should also maintain the critical and introspective spirit in the process of marketization. For the obvious contradictions between authenticity and artistry, ideological content and entertainment, sociality and commerciality, the author thinks that we should analyze and discuss it seriously.Chinese human geography documentary is still faced with a lot of problems in the marketization, such as the constraints of the creation and broadcast model, the ossification of narrative, the insufficiency of productivity, and the lack of marketing consciousness. We need to speed up the cultural system reform, increase the narrative skill, complete the investment and financing mechanism, build industry foundation, and value the marketing section to improve the whole situation.
