In information age, people are getting to seek for spiritual life with higher quality. Different kinds of reading lectures and reading clubs, serving as public cultural spaces where people share views and knowledge together, become very popular. From the view of Space theory and Communication Science, this article takes the Literary Life House as a case, investigating a series of communication practice in the public cultural space which contains both physical and virtual dimensions. It also summarizes characteristics of the public cultural space and functions of new media in constructing the space. Meanwhile, we can know more about the mechanism of cultural production and communication in the public cultural space.The paper consists of five chapters. The introduction introduces the research background, research significance, research questions and research methods of the article. The second chapter includes literature review and concept interpretation of public cultural space. It also explains why the Literary Life House is a public cultural space and summarizes the four developing periods of it. Chapter 3 and chapter 4 are the main parts of this article. Chapter 3 studies spatial practice in physical space: construction of spatial landscape and community image; activities of communication and social interaction in the community, which can be divided into information space, relationship space and meaning space. Chapter 4 discusses communication activities in virtual space with application of new media such as QQ group and Wechat. Meanwhile, it analyzes the meaning with which the users endow the virtual space. Taking the Literary Life House as an example, this article summarizes functions of new media in constructing public cultural space and characteristics of public cultural space under the new media environment. Chapter 5 explains the mechanism of power operation and cultural production in the Literary Life House. |
