A Study Of "Tajie" Writing In Fantastic Legendary Novels During Middle And Late Tang Dynasty

“Tajie” refers to the surreal world that is opposite to the real world people living in, which usually mutually project with “Cijie”. The “Tajie” writing in the fantastic and legendary novels during middle and late Tang Dynasty not only manifested the multiple possibilities of life models but also integrated with the space-time concept in traditional culture, which is full of rich and profound humanistic implication, and reflected the social reality as well as cultural life of people in Tang Dynasty. Started with the idea of “Tajie”, this article discussed about how the “Tajie” novels during middle and late Tang Dynasty follow former creation concept and write conventions so as to refine and embody the writing characteristics of “magic words” as well as “fancy conceptions”.Based on the research of former scholars, this article divided the “Tajie” novels during middle and late Tang Dynasty into four story types according to the different spatial natures of various types and plot models of story development, including “fairyland”, “ghostdom”, “demon world” and “dreamland”. By dating back to the belief and motif in “Tajie” idea that is in inheritance with Chinese culture, it explored how people in Tang Dynasty integrate the expression of subject consciousness while inheriting as well as innovating the plot motif and narrative strategy of “Tajie” novels. By means of binary comparison, the second part discussed about the “time structure” and “space structure” of “Tajie” novels. In the aspect of time, the comprehensive use of “story time” and “narration time” in “Tajie” novels constituted dual time sequence system, which endowed the abstract time with mode flexible changes and values. As for space, the prominent characteristics of “Tajie” space in Tang Dynasty is the confusion phenomenon of “Tajie” while “special space” was good at depicting the sensory perceptions to construct the heterogeneity of sacred space and wicked space. However, the in-depth structure of “Tajie” space-time is full of circular trace. From the perspective of times, the third part interpreted the age feature and social reality showed by people in Tang Dynasty in visional creation so as to further explain the subject consciousness as well as humanistic spirit contained in the works.
