Commenting On Geling Yan’s Alienation Theme In Her Fictions

Geling Yan is one of the few Chinese writers who have the high-yield high-quality, wide-ranging works today. With refined language, skillful and innovative narrative, implicated thinking and the remarkable literary achievement, she occupies an irreplaceable position in the Chinese literary world.A central issue in the creation of Geling Yan is the consistent discussion of freedom, in which a striking theme about human alienation has been derived out. In this paper, the fictions are the centers of the study. With the research method of Texts Close Reading and the guidance of psychoanalytic theory, this paper studied the theme of alienation in Geling Yan’s fictions.There will be four chapters which are built by two questions in this paper. In Chapter One, through the analysis of several figures(such as Yanshi Lu, Ziye Feng, Shaoyong Sun and Wenxiu), this paper tries to study the relationship between power(the Governmental Power and Group discourse power) and personal alienation, in order to show the different states of human alienation. The second chapter starts from the emotion, which can also be used as an external force(Psychological pressure),and the external force can make man alienate. Geling Yan deeply revealed how do the emotions(debts of kindness and love) make the human alienate in the fictions such as The World, A Coffee Shop with No Way Out, An Epic of a Woman. In the third chapter, this paper transfers the sight from external forces to the internal ones to examine the alienation which caused by desires(The desire of gambling and the desire of persecution). These three chapters investigate how various forces bring about the alienation of human from the outside to inside, from far to near. The fourth chapter is based on the analysis above, which tries to explore the spiritual world of the writer from her personal experience by the analysis of author’s prose and interviews, and analyzes the causes of the alienation theme in her creation. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of Geling Yan’s thinking, and make useful complement of the research work of Geling Yan’s fictions.In short, as a writer who concerns human nature, Geling Yan shows more alienation phenomena through artistic approach. Her concern of individual freedom and torture of humanity are both instructive.
