This is a translation report based on the Fan-qui in China written by Charles Toogood Downing of England. The Fan-qui in China is about the living experience of the author in China. The reason for translating this book is its great value in studying the relationship between China and foreign countries in the 18th and 19th century. The translation report is based on my work for translating the excerpts of the Fan-qui in China. In my opinion, translation is a subject which is scientific, technical and artistic. Thus, the translation work, which under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, was carried out based on the original book after careful analysis, according to its characteristics and type. Meanwhile, all kinds of translation techniques were analyzed and discussed which were adopted in the process of translation. This translation report has five parts. The first part is the translation project profile, including a simple introduction of the source, contents and its meaning. The second part is the description of the translation process, which includes pre-translation. while-translation, and after-translation. The third part introduce the concept of the functional equivalence. The fourth part is case analysis, which shows how to put the functional equivalence and translation techniques into the certain translation cases and then illustrate. The fifth part is the conclusion, mainly including the achievement and insufficient in the translation report.
