Erhu is a traditional Chinese folk instrument first appeared in Tang Dynasty. For a long period of time, Erhu was only used as a folk accompaniment while having not received much attention. In the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, Erhu entered imperial court music as a musical instrument. However, Erhu was a still popular folk instrument for opera accompaniment and religious ceremonies. Since Abing used Erhu in folk music, people began to pay attention to Erhu. In the initial development of Erhu Art, Liu Tianhua used advanced and scientific ideas and concepts in Erhu and became representative of the first generation of the Reform and Development of Erhu. His achievement helped the second generation representative (Liu Wenjin) to inherit and carry forward Erhu Art, and laid a solid foundation so that Mr. Liu Wenjin became the next landmark representative after Mr. Liu Tianhua.This article discusses the development of Erhu Art from Liu Tianhua to Liu Wenjin periods from different perspectives. From the viewpoint of Erhu’s art development history in China,is divided into four stages of development.First, the article lists the development of Erhu Art during different periods of time. Then, the article uses three aspects (landmark representatives, works and skills, and historical Status) to summarize the inheritance and development of Erhu Art at various stages.This research leads us to have a better understanding of Erhu, which plays a signification role of Chinese traditional musical instruments. After accumulating one thousand years of civilization and historical heritage, Erhu gradually becomes a professional, scientific, systematic and independent national instrumental music creation with its own performance system. Moreover, it has guiding significance for the development of the Erhu Art and forecasts the future development of Erhu.
