New Market,in the east of the West Lake,was one of the distinctive urban space during 1912-1937. New Market was Hangzhou in miniature in the process to step to modernization. It was the most comprehensive urban area in Hangzhou during 1912-1937. It was constructed into new markets after 1911,where named "Manchu Garrison"and comprised of units from Manchu,Mongol,and Han banners during Qing Dynasty.The new government focused on land planning and formed business in the particular area in order to destroys "Manchu Garrison". New Market get a prerequisite to become the city center through road construction and the formation of modern communications-transportation network.It became tourist center of the city for the advantageous geographic location and the facility construction associated with tourism industry.This combination promotes economic development,finally New Market became one of the economic centers.In addition,It also served a social and political function through commercial activity, tourism products,and educational practices.Land development,road and traffic construction,tourism environmental management and tourism facilities upgrade,business and economics changes,education development,social and political function, what led to make a summing up of the reasons of the New Market’s successful development.These all show the process form traditional society to modernization urban area.
