Su Tong was born in a typical south street at the north the city of Suzhou, and spent his childhood there. The street which is built along the riverside, is the prototype of Xiangchunshu street in his novels.The most distinctive feature of the street is the flowing river. The geographical environment of his hometown has a huge impact on Su Tong’s creations.The river image is a distinctive mark in his works. The river image represents the feature of south life,and it deeply integrates into every aspect of his works. As a far-reaching background,the river image exists in almost every story.This text is divided into five parts. The first chapter is the analysis of the relationship between the writer and the river. The river is not only really exists in Su Tong’s living environment, and to some extent,it represents the downfall of the south. The second chapter mainly discusses that the river is a kind of escape of the shore. The river not only represents the confrontation with the shore, but also a place which the people who is under pressure of the reality fled to. The third chapter is the analysis of the image of death which carried by the river. The way of dying in Su Tong’s novels is drowned. And to some extent, death is the final destination of escape. In the fourth chapter, we discuss the characteristic of rivers of hiding the desires. It not only hide the repressed sexuality, but also reflects the aesthetic desire of the street. In the fifth chapter, as a symbol of history, river is the contrast of the development of the times, and it also witnessed the history of fantasy and reality. Therefore the analysis of river images in Su Tong’s novels can help us further explore the core of his works.
