Reasearch On Historiography Of Chen Hanzhang

CHEN Hanzhang, a famous historian is noted for his rich knowledge and writings in recent history. In history field, CHEN has specialized books in the general history and dynastic history, historiography theory and traditional textual criticism, such as General History of China, Ancient History, Introduction to Historiography, Shi Tong Complementary Interpretation, etc. But very few people have read them because above works are lecture notes. This study is based on the above four lectures, discussing Chen Hanzhang’s characteristics of historical research, historical achievement and influence, so as to enrich the overall understanding of history at the beginning of twentieth century for the academic circles. This paper is divided into six parts. The introduction reviews previous research. It points out that existing research is mostly short essays about the generalization of Chen Hanzhang’s academic career and lacks in-depth and systematic research. The first chapter describes Chen’s academic evolution as three stages. Firstly, he studies under the tutelage of Yu Yue and Huang Yizhou establishing his academic foundation. Secondly, he studies in JingShiDaXueTang and teaches Chinese history, ancient history at Peking University and writes the General History of China, Ancient History. Thirdly, he teaches the introduction to history at the Central University and writes Introduction to Historiography, Shi Tong Complementary Interpretation. The second, third and fourth chapter respectively take the General History of China, Ancient History, Introduction to History and Shi Tong Complementary Interpretation as the object to study Chen’s historical achievement in the general history and dynastic history, historiography theory and traditional textual research. The appendix is the list of Chen’s historical achievement in order to show his academic course visually.Overall, the historical research characteristics and academic concepts of Chen Hanzhang are as follows:firstly, he is good at researching and quoting, pays attention to the use of tables and map; secondly, he has multiple historical views and his study learns from foreign historiography; thirdly, he sticks to traditional historiography and lays emphasis on the revitalization of the national spirit.
