| As the international academic communication becomes increasingly frequent,academic translation as carrier and an important part of the academic monographs,has received unprecedented attention in China. But whether in study depth or models,academic translation studies still remain in the step of problem-raising, classification,and literature, lagging far behind the studies in news, tourism, and literary translations.Based on English-to-Chinese translation of an academic writing Sociology of Giving,this thesis uses the stylistic knowledge and Text Analyzer, a corpus software, to analyze the style of this book from the lexical, syntactical, and co-textual levels. This paper finds that in the lexical level, Sociology of Giving uses the abstract words,technical terms, and the compound adjectives frequently. In the syntactical level, this book often uses the passive sentences, it-pattern sentences, and the long and complicated sentences accompanied by plenty of informative attributive clauses,appositive clauses, adverbial clauses, and parentheses. In the co-textual level, this book uses massive personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and substitution to connect the sentences and paragraphs. Based on these style features, this thesis raises the translation methods such as the conversion and division methods. This thesis contains five chapters. The first chapter introduced the current situation of the academic translation in China. After summarizing the development and existing problems in China’s academic translation, this chapter proposed the idea to use the stylistic knowledge to study the guidance to and effects of the writing styles on academic translation. In the second chapter, this thesis introduced the definition,development and the related researches of the stylistics. In the third chapter, this thesis analyzed and summarized the styling features of Sociology of Giving from the lexical,syntactical, and co-textual levels. In the fourth chapter, this thesis suggested the conversion, division, addition and other translation methods with examples based on the styling features of the book. In the last chapter, this thesis summarized the study and prospected the future development of the study on academic translation. |
