Report On The Translation Of The Culture Column Of The Economist

Nowadays, the booming economy has also brought cultural prosperity. In this cultural background, we should open up a global view and keep eyes on the reports and remarks of authoritative media overseas on hot cultural issues. As a typical representative of English journal, the Economist has insightful and authoritative views on the cultural field. Paying attention to and translating some articles of its culture column can help to enhance the cultural communication and improve the culture integration, and most importantly, to offer more chances to cultural innovation. In order to make the Economist play a more effective role in cultural communication, relatively mature translation strategies and standard versions are required. However, the current translation practice on the Economist focuses more on the translation of financial texts than that of the cultural ones. Moreover, cultural differences between Chinese and English also add to the difficulty of translation, such as the differences in values, religious beliefs, and ways of thinking.Based on this discussion, the author focuses on the translation and analysis of the culture column of the Economist in its official website. With the guidance of Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, the author has translated twelve different types of articles selected from the culture column, and pointed out the translation strategies and methods used in the translation by analyzing the importance of background knowledge, giving priority to the free translation, focusing on the reader-orientation and pursuing the functional equivalence. All the cases are based on the Functional Equivalence Theory and relevant references. In the end, the author sums up the whole report and puts forward her views and doubts.During the writing process, the author looks up a lots of background knowledge, bravely tries different translation strategies and methods and actively works out solutions to solve translation problems. The author also analyzes the shortcoming and deficiency in her translation in hoping that this thesis can be enlightening for the further study.
