| In recent years, rapid development has been made in the internationalization of higher education. With the purpose of seeking sustainable development, universities in China have seen a wave of Sino-foreign cooperation in education. University webpage profile in English version, as a main channel for people in foreign countries to learn the situation of a specific university, has become an important window to universities’ foreign-oriented publicity and demonstration in this wave of Sino-Foreign educational cooperation. Effective information in university webpage profile can attract more international students and strengthen the international academic exchange. However, the university webpages in English version of many universities are translated literally from their Chinese version. Due to various differences between Chinese and English, the translation quality is more likely to be uneven, which, consequently, sheds a negative influence on the image of those universities. So far, the study of C-E translation of university webpage profile has focused on the framework of functionalist approach. Particular emphasis is put on the analysis and classification of translation errors in English university webpage profile while the lack of guidance to correcting those errors in functionalist approach is ignored. Hence, there is no persuasive theoretical framework to be used to guide the correction of those errors. Currently, the countermeasures of those various errors in English webpage profiles are introduced from the conventional solutions, which can be applied to any translation errors, such as omission, simplification and annotation. Cooperative Principle, put forward by Herbert Paul Grice, states that in all communicative activities, both sides in the conversation have a tacit understanding to obey some principles in order to achieve effective communication. University webpage profile, as a medium used to communicate with target readers, should also obey the Cooperative Principle to make effective communication. Based on the fact that both Grice’s Cooperative Principle and functionalist translation theory focus on the level of language’s function, this thesis constructs a function-blending model to make a study of C-E translation of university webpage profile. Firstly, in the macro perspective and under the guidance of functionalist translation theory, the thesis will determine the text type of university webpage profile, analyze the concrete translation action of university webpage profile and classify translation errors. Then under the guidance of Grice Cooperative Principle, the thesis will put forward target solutions in correspondence with the concrete translation errors in micro level. The thesis chooses university webpage profiles in 30 China’s universities and 15 foreign universities. The research methodology used in this study consists of case study, contrastive analysis and qualitative analysis. Firstly, the study makes a comparison between domestic university webpage profile and foreign university webpage profile, through which their similarities and differences will be located. In the process, the translation errors in domestic university webpage profile will be found and classified. Then qualitative analysis will be used. The function-blending model will be applied to give an all-round and multi-dimensional analysis to university webpage profile. The study is carried out from the perspective of language function and hence constructs a function-blending model to analyze university webpage profile comprehensively, which serves as an impetus to prompt the standardization and rationalization of university English webpage profiles, facilitate the academic communication between domestic universities and foreign universities, and hence to accelerate the pace of internationalization of higher education. |
