This research is aimed to review and reconsider the balance between artistry and commerciality, focusing on.the Cantonese and Taiwanese Martial Art movies. The study will taking The Grandmasters, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Assassin as examples. By being an artistic form as well as commercial products, the martial art films, which is an unique gene of Chinese language films, is closely influenced by the social culture and oriental values. Moreover the producers are also trying to meet the audiences’requirement globally. In this thesis, firstly it will analysis the narrative of these three films. Then it will focus on the different understanding and presenting of the martial art world from Wong Kar-wai, Ang Lee and Hou Hsiao-hsien. Furthermore, it will compare and contrast the different film grammar used by the directors to agree that both Hollywood-style commercial films and art film could break the limitation of the stereotype and regain the balance between artistic critic and film market. Finally, the study will discuss the production and distribution in the global communication circumstances.
