In recent years, with the development of medicine, medical researchers in China have begun to show their interest in how environmental exposures influence people’s health. However, relevant research in our country about exposome, the study of relationship between environment and people’s health, is still at its elementary stage. Therefore, translating a book about exposome can not only provides theoretical basis for exposome research in China, but also has some practical significance in clinical applications. Besides, the translation memory database of exposome and termbase the author built in the process of translation may provide a reference for the medical translation company to conduct similar translation project in the future. This paper is a report of the English-Chinese translation practice of a scholarly book The Exposome:A Primer. Based on the writer’s translation practice, this report conducts a thorough analysis of the translation process and a case study of the translated version, focusing on addressing two key issues:how to choose translation strategies properly according to the text types and their linguistic features, and how to handle the terminology and long and complex sentences in the text, so as to make the translated text convey the meaning and information of the source text faithfully as well as cater to the target readers’ communication habits. The report reveals that translation is not only an inter-lingual communicative activity, but also an inter-cultural communication process. Therefore, as translators, we should first have a comprehensive understanding of every aspect of translation project we undertake, and have a thoughtful consideration of different cultural backgrounds of both the source language and the target language, and meanwhile, faithfully convey the information and meanings of the source language by means of adopting proper translation strategies and skills. As for the translation of terminology, especially those terms which don’t have set translation version, the translator should consult large quantities of data and information, master relevant translation standards and techniques in order to guarantee the accuracy of terminological translation. Finally, it is advisable that the translator should revise the translated version for several times to get more successful translation with the assistance of computer aided translation tools.
