The Fate of a Great Power written by Jeremy Black, Professor of History at University of Exeter and also a historian. France as a European and world power from17th to 19th century, its history of that period is full of vicissitudes, which is of great significance and meaning for study. With more veiled details, the book From Louis â…©â…£ to Napoleon. The Fate of a Great Power can be an approach to learning the French history of that period. In the hope that this practice enhances her translation competence and improves her translation skills, the author and translator of the project wants to help Chinese readers understand the book and learn the French history between Louis â…©â…£ and Napoleon as well. The report is based on that translation project.The first chapter tells readers the overview of the French history between 17th century and 19th century in terms of foreign policy. After an introduction and a description of the translation task, under the guidance of skopos theory, this paper discusses the difficulties and problems of the translation and how to overcome those difficulties and solve those problems.The difficulties and problems mainly lie in the translation of some complex sentences and very idiomatic expressions. Skopos theory focuses above all on the purpose of the translation, which determines the translation methods to be employed in order to produce a functionally adequate result, namely the target text, the translatum as Vermeer calls. Under the guidance of the theory, many translation methods and skills like addition, conversion, the literal translation and liberal translation were adopted in the translation practice.
