| Before the Khitan establish the Liao dynasty, a majority of Nomads, including Khitan, had been influenced by the culture of Han. Essentially, both the Hanization and the Khitanization are the perfect exemplification of Ethnic Fusion. In about two hundred years of Liao dynasty, the Khitan culture had developed by accepting the Han’s culture.’Inherent Custom" and "Han custom" formed the Dibasic structure of Liao kingdom. They built up the Khitans empire by launching wars, and suppressed the Song kingdom by their military power, too. During this period, Khitan’s national character had produced and developed. The first part of this paper introduced the location of graves and the content of these murals which based on regional distribution. In the second part, this study analyzed the different themes of mural paintings and discussed the influence of both Han and Khitan culture on their choice making. In addition, this paper also summarized the characteristics of the Liao murals in different periods. In the third part, the research shows the evolving of standard format of portraits in these mural paintings, which reflects the strong national characteristics of Khitan and the trend of strengthen the "Inherent Custom" during that time. In the last part, this study researched the Khitanization of Han by observing the grave fresco. |
