Artistic image is a special manifestation of pursuing of truth, good and beauty in the consciousness of human beings. The real sensible species can be mapped to the concept, which is the nature of art. Artistic image is main constituent of the creation of artistic work, and shaping the character is a sufficient component of artistic image, so studying the change in painting character modeling has important value. From the perspective of the history of art, this study summarized four stages which western painting characters went through, including Thestage of primitive simplicity, classical stage of figurative realistic, impression stage of objective performance and abstract stage of subjective sublimation. Besides, this study also demonstrated clearly the evolution which is from drawing the shape of the character modeling to abstracting the painting character and accurately summarize the feature of the character modeling in each stage. In addition, this study, utilizing several important painting schools in each period to intuitively show painting style and character modeling’s features of this period, analyzing the causes of evolution of the western painting character modeling, pointed out that religious, historical background, the progress of productivity and science, enhanced human awareness, and cultural integration have a significant role in the development of character modeling.
