A Consecutive Interpreting Practical Report On The Television Documentary Roof Of The World

In recent years, with the development of broadcasting cause, lots of outstanding television documentaries have appeared, which overwhelmingly enrich people’s cultural life and horizons. The Roof of the World is one of the excellent television documentaries of CCTV.About Tibet, for its special language and custom, there are relatively few detailed introductions in both Chinese and English. It is a huge challenge for the author and also an opportunity to practice consecutive interpretation.As a Chinese to English consecutive interpreting(C-E CI), this report selects the Roof of the World as the subject. The author selects the first four series of this television documentary as the text objects for detailed case analysis. The report is based on the comparison analysis on the two phases of consecutive interpreting of Roof of the World, which are "unprepared interpreting" and "prepared interpreting". In the report the author not only describes the whole interpreting practice on the documentary, but also analyzes the problems and difficulties in the process.The report is divided into three parts:In introduction, the author gives a brief introduction to the television documentary Roof of the World. The author also refers to the difficulties which may encounter in the practice and the practical significance of this practice.The main body of this report is the second part which contains three chapters.The first chapter is the task description which includes the detailed contents, language style, practice target and the main interpreting strategy.The second chapter is the comparison of the two interpreting processes. The first part is about the interpreting progress without any preparation work and the summary of the problems. The second part is the description of the prepared interpreting progress. Before the second phase interpreting, the interpreter does do some preparation work which includes background knowledge, related words and a general assessment on this phase. The third part is a brief analysis and summary of the two phases.The third chapter is case analysis. Based on two phases’ interpreting practice and specific examples, the author makes an analysis with the differences with regard to the following three levels:words and phrases, sentences and note-taking. Firstly, the interpreter discusses the different ways in dealing with Tibetan characteristic word. Secondly, the author analyzes the different methods in interpreting. Thirdly, for note-taking, it lists the two different notes written down during the interpreting practices.The last chapter is the conclusion. The interpreter reconsiders the whole interpreting practice and sums up the lesson of this activity.
