The modern Chinese rhetorical question is a kind of sentence which attract other people’s attention in the form of general question and convey speaker’s "special" emotion or "unique" views. It is frequently used in the daily communication and literary writing between Chinese. However, it is hard for foreign students to harness the rhetorical question and it is easy to make mistakes in learning and applying rhetorical question. For that matter, the teaching of rhetorical question is a major difficulty and key point that should not be ignored.This thesis aims at redefinng the rhetorical questions from the point of teaching Chinese as a second language combining qualitative research with quantitative research and universals with ontoanalysis based on the current research. It investigates the application of rhetorical questions in the field of TCSL, which includes the presentation in syllabus and teaching materials, the understanding and usage of foreign students and then sorting out the regular errors of foreign students and their problems to put forward a targeted teaching strategy and practical teaching methods. It also emphasizes teaching Chinese as a second language at the pragmatic level and analysing the pragmatic conditions, pragmatic function andpramatic taboo. It expects to provide some bases and references for the rhetorical question in teaching Chinese as a second language and make the foreign students apply the rhetorical question flexibly through training and guiding them comprehensively by means of listening, reading and writing.This thesis consists of six chapters:The introduction part states the current research achievements of Chinese rhetorical questions and indicates the purpose, significance, innovation, corpus sources and research method.The first chapter gives a systematic ontology research and discusses the definition, characteristics, categories, semantic and pragmatic value of the rhetorical question.The second chapter investigates the classification and presentation of rhetorical questions in teaching outline and teaching materials of rhetorical question in the concrete.The third chapter carries analysis on the rhetorical questions’understanding and usage of foreign students, and tries to find out the causes of existing problems.The forth chapter describes the teaching strategies, teaching emphases and specific teaching methods of various types of courses in rhetorical question teaching.The conclusion part summarizes the whole thesis.
