Research On North American Presbyterian Church’s Enterprise In Hunan(1888-1937)

Western churches have been coming to China to preach since the 19 th century, Hunan gets the widely attention because of the geographical location, however, the western churches come to Hunan late for Hunan’s conservative and xenophobia. The north Presbyterian church was early to Hunan, the first church was built in 1888 when the missionary from the north of GunagDong of Lianzhou to Linwu. After that, the north Presbyterian church expands to Chenzhou, Hengyang, Xiangtan,Changde and Taoyuan. Except the sermon, the Presbyterian church also founds education, medical treatment and charity career.The development of the North Presbyterian’s enterprise not only affected by the north Presbyterian’s policy, and by the special reality of Hunan and China. The north Presbyterian church’s enterprise in Hunan experiences a progress of development and changes, and increasingly localization. The Presbyterian’s relationship with hunan society also experienced a process from conflict to coordinate. In this progress, the Presbyterian church’s enterprise in Hunan not only spreads the western religious and secular culture,but also has a significant impact on Hunan’s politics,education,medical treatment and social relief, influences the transformation of modern society in Hunan province.
