The evolution of the images of the birds is an important element during the development of the Chinese flower-and-bird painting. Except the introduction, this paper regards the evolution from the Chinese primeval pottery pattern to the images of the birds in the contemporary flower-and-bird painting as the main body. According to the evolution of the images of the birds, there are four chapters to discuss it: the images of the birds in the embryonic flower-and-bird painting; the images of the birds in the flower-and-bird painting, which is in the transition of the flower-and-bird painting from the realistic paintings to the freehand brushworks; the images of the birds led by the flower-and-bird painting and the images of the birds in the contemporary flower-and-bird painting. This paper also summarizes and analyzes the evolution of the images of the birds in the flower-and-bird painting with the time as the order; the development of the art and aesthetic as the mean line and the main works from the representative artists as the foundation.Like other arts, the flower-and-bird painting has the synchronous origin with mankind. The earliest flower-and-bird painting was the combination of the aesthetic of the appearance and the practicability of live, for example, the patterns of the birds and flowers on the primeval potteries. The images of the birds have been developing with the flower-and-bird painting growing from the mature stage to prosperity; and the artists began to express the interior feelings more than discussing the form of the flower-and-bird painting. The evolution of the images of the birds can be clearly seen from the realistic painting of Xiesheng Zhenqin Tu Juan painted by Huang Quan(903-965)and the painting of Chuge Yaomiao Tu painted by Xu Xi(937-975)to freehand brushworks of Bada Shanren(1626-1705).As exploiting new forms and the pluraliam in 21 st century, the images of the birds in the contemporary flower-and-bird painting have more forms, highlighting the spitit of the times and strongly expressing the feelings. There are some main causes for the evolution of the images: photo-taking has been involved; new materials have been used and the ability in modeling has been improved, etc. All the causes provide the material and technology for the evolution of the images of the birds so that the styles have been diversified. A new chapter for art has been written.
