| Reading Tian-shi-zhai Pictorial under publicity horizon involves the contents of narrative and visual communication at two levels. The narrative level refers to the constituent elements of images of the pictorial and the selective preference and idea tendency presented by image groups. In this paper, through extracting the image groups of "medical care", "education" and "entertainment" covering the broadest population and analyzing the "public function" and "public awareness" in these areas, we explored "space publicity", "group popularization", "gender equality", "type diversity" and "political neutrality" and other characteristics in narrative expression."Publicity"at the visual communication level on the one hand can be built in "space", "view", "watch" and other aspects and on the other hand can help find clues in misunderstanding of "image and text", "images and images" "images and historical records". In visual element expression, Tian-shi-zhai Pictorial tends to present public space and also pay attention to its openness even in presentation of some interior and private space. In terms of view, it tends to shown an open perspective and panoramic view and focuses on expressing new visual carriers and creating continuous visual landscape. In terms of viewing angle, it emphasizes the viewer’s aggregation, symbolization and diversity and pays attention to present the viewer’s various viewing behaviors, such as circuseeing and peeping etc. It also emphasizes grasping the visual psychology of readers of the pictorial. In addition, Tian-shi-zhai Pictorial’s expression of ’publicity" is somewhat different from the social reality of the late Qing Dynasty in texts and graphics, image misunderstanding and cultural misunderstanding.Through "qualitative research" and "image analysis", this paper created the "publicity" characteristic of the pictorial at narrative level and visual communication levels and carried out multi-level interpretation of images in the hope of making some progress in exploring how Tian-shi-zhai Pictorial became "the visual source of the Chinese people in modern times" and "the constructed element of the visual world in China in the Late Qing Dynasty". |
