Abstract/Summary:
After the opening of the trading ports in the late Qing Dynasty,newspapers,pictorial and other western paper media were introduced into China one after another.On this basis,Shanghai’s press and publishing industry developed continuously.Among them,Dianshizhai Pictorial,which is regarded as the first news pictorial in modern China and founded by the British businessman Major,was also born here.Dianshizhai Pictorial not only reported the new knowledge at home and abroad,but also depicted the local Chinese society in many ways,especially the living conditions and image building of beggars,prostitutes and thieves in the late Qing Dynasty.Therefore,I chosen Panofsky’s theory of image research and have done the image description at first.In Dianshizhai Pictorial of the late Qing Dynasty,these three bottom groups not only had a wide range of channels and sources,but also depicted the beggars’ livelihood with superstition and violence in addition to begging,and combined the theme of good deeds and filial piety with beggars to create traditional works.Prostitutes,as a female group,are widely represented in pictorial newspapers.The images of prostitutes,which are both fashionable and traditional,different methods and efforts of marriage,as well as their interaction with the authorities and foreigners,are both three-dimensional,vivid and weak,and at the same time reflect the urban consumption culture of Shanghai in the late Qing Dynasty and their self-consciousness which is displayed but suppressed.Thieves group can be divided into two categories according to their activity places:land route and water route.The land route is more frequent and shows different characteristics in each stage of the crime.In the interaction with officials and people,the collusion of interests becomes an unavoidable topic of discussion.Then I’ve done the image analysis.In the late Qing Dynasty,beggars,prostitutes and thieves in the process of building the image of the underlying group,Dianshizhai Pictorial sets realistic and imagine as one of the rich reshaping,thinks its image presents the diversification,mystery and moral quality of idealized in common,and that with the affinity of Shanghai in late Qing Dynasty social changes in economic,ideological,and the creators sticking to the Confucian values.Finally,in the interpretation of the meaning of image construction,with the help of the Media Memory and Communicology,it is believed that it shows people’s everyday memory including the beggars,prostitutes and thieves ’s survival condition and the change in the late Qing Dynasty Shanghai society’s material,in the communication process of meeting the demand of mass entertainment and playing education function,and produces the enlightenment and promoting effects of people who were lack of the fashion idea and equality consciousness in the late Qing Dynasty.
