Tanakh,which can also be referred to as Hebrew Bible, is the Holy Scripture of Judaism. Tanakh has experienced a long and complicated process of canonization and has formed basically a kind of integrated and closed text around the beginning of Christian era. Moreover, it has exerted an extensive and lasting influence beyond time and space upon Jewish people as much more than just a religious classic. This thesis explores the role of ancient Tanakh in the modern Israel---starting with the convening of the 1st The Zionist Movement in 1897 and how it works from the point of view of Cultural Memory Theory.At first, this thesis employs the three dimensions of “Culture Memory Theory”---psychological dimension, social dimension, and cultural dimension to analyze the influence of Tanakh on modern Israelis, to expound its great impact on creating the characters of Israelis, communicating the interpersonal relationships and inheriting the culture of Israel. After that, the thesis discusses the functions it made in constructing and developing modern Israel countries as Jewish people’s collective memory medium. The functions include that, the stored function in constructing the identity, the implicate function in promoting the “Zonism”,and the spreading function which made the Israel countries be accepted and supported by the international society. The influence also includes its function in concreting the modern Israel nation as a core of the national acceptance. The national characters and ethnic conception of modern Israel was constructed by Tanakh. Moreover, the description in Tanakh about the festivals and customs provides rich and colorful customs for modern Israel.The thesis explains the effects of Tanakh from the perspectives of individual, country and nation. Through affecting the individuals, it proffers a theoretical and psychological basis for the modern Israel country. From a present point of view, Tanakh can enlighten people when they are facing difficult problems. In the end, the thesis points out its benefits and revelations from the perspectives of national contradiction, relationships between politics and education, and the disputes with neighbor countries.
